Integration with Undergraduate Studies

The integration of the Graduate Program in Education with undergraduate studies, in Pedagogy and Licentiate Degree programs, occurs through teaching, research and extension activities, advising on Undergraduate Final Projects (TCC), the PIBID programs, and the curricular activities of the master's and doctoral courses, specifically, the Education Forum.

The Education Forum is a mandatory curricular activity for master's and doctoral students, which consists of organizing seminars on their developing research. This curricular activity is open for participation by undergraduate students and basic education professionals.

Another activity that also has significant participation from undergraduate courses is the "QUARTA NA PÓS" (Wednesday in Graduate Studies), which is a platform for presenting and debating research developed by the PPGE's alumni. The cohorts organize a joint presentation of their ongoing research for undergraduate students and external members of basic education.

Generally, undergraduate and graduate students participate together in different events in the field, both local and national. The events are organized by the research lines in conjunction with the Study and Research Centers of the Center for Education, and they constitute a fundamental space for bringing undergraduate and graduate students closer together. Undergraduate and graduate students are directly involved in initiatives that promote the participation of undergraduate students in the Program's Dissertation and Thesis defense sessions and other formative activities sponsored by the PPGE.

It is important to highlight that integration with undergraduate studies is facilitated by the UFES's internal policy, which includes regulations and programs that favor the exchange between undergraduate and graduate levels. Resolution nº 11/2010-CEPE and the General Regulation of Graduate Studies at UFES, for example, stipulate that all full-time faculty members of the University who work in Graduate Programs must teach classes at the undergraduate level in disciplines under the responsibility of the Department where they are appointed.

Due to this requirement, PPGE faculty members generally teach up to two courses in undergraduate programs. It is worth noting that the work of permanent faculty members in undergraduate studies transcends the scope of the Pedagogy course, since the common pedagogical disciplines for licentiate degree programs are the responsibility of the Center for Education, as are the discussions regarding the pedagogical guidelines of the University's different licentiate degree programs. Thus, as most PPGE professors are appointed to the three departments of the Center for Education that offer pedagogical disciplines for the 16 Licentiate Degree Programs at UFES, and many of them also serve as CE representatives in the collegiate bodies of these programs, the intensity of the exchange between undergraduate and graduate studies at the PPGE, via teaching, is evident.

This exchange is also fostered through the Institutional Scientific Initiation Program (PIIC), maintained by the Pro-Rectory of Research and Graduate Studies (PRPPG), which has contributed significantly to the integration between undergraduate and graduate studies. It enables the formation of research groups composed of permanent faculty members of the program, faculty from the Center for Education, doctoral students, master's students, and undergraduate students (IC scholarship students and students from the Volunteer Scientific Initiation Program - PIVIC). The agencies that have greatly contributed to this articulation are the Espírito Santo Research Foundation (FAPES), CAPES, and CNPq, which, through public calls for proposals, have funded research projects. These projects include quotas for IC scholarships, which allow undergraduate students to work on research conducted by the program's faculty. It is also worth highlighting the Integrated Scholarship Program for Undergraduate Students (PAD) at UFES, with students who work on research, extension, and supervised teaching activities under the guidance of the program's faculty. Through PAD, undergraduate students are involved in the planning and organization of events (study cycles/circles, lectures, and seminars), in extension activities, and in study groups.

A new integration initiative, started in 2017, between graduate studies, research centers, and undergraduate studies involves holding an event to present the teaching, research, and extension activities developed by professors of the Center for Education to new undergraduate students. It should be noted that this activity is part of the University's academic calendar.

Another important avenue for exchange between undergraduate and graduate studies is the Tutorial Education Project "Connections of Knowledge" (PET), which works on the theme of education, specifically early childhood education, focusing on teacher training. It integrates undergraduate students from the Pedagogy, Visual Arts, and Physical Education programs. The proposed actions articulate teaching, research (Research Project: Student Trajectories), and extension (Extension Project: Early Childhood Education: Teaching Work in Encounter with Children), based on five axes: integration with regional and national PET groups, integration with other PET groups within UFES, integration with other "Connections Education" PET groups at the local and national levels, specific activities in the field of action of the "Connections Education" PET, and actions linked to the students' original courses. These axes are integrated into the execution of the actions to work towards a complete work proposal, from a theoretical-methodological perspective that highlights the students' protagonism. There are 12 undergraduate students involved, and the coordinator responsible for the group is Professor Valdete Côco, PhD. The PET receives funding from CAPES and FNDE.

Finally, we highlight the contribution of graduate studies to undergraduate studies through the advising of Undergraduate Final Projects (TCC) by the PPGE faculty. Many professors from the Program, when not directly involved in advising, participate in TCC defense committees.

In summary, the integration with undergraduate studies occurs mainly in the following activities:

a) offering courses in Pedagogy and other licentiate degree programs;

b) advising on undergraduate final papers (TCC);

c) advising on Scientific Initiation scholarships (PIBIC/CNPq and volunteers - PIVIC/UFES), PROLICEN, and other undergraduate scholarship modalities;

d) the inclusion of the Teaching Internship of the Program's scholarship students in undergraduate courses;

e) advising on extension scholarships;

f) event organization;

g) coordination and participation in study and research centers;

h) involvement of undergraduate students in study groups and research centers;

i) mandatory curricular activity for master's and doctoral students - the Education Forum;

j) holding the "QUARTA NA PÓS" event once a month.

Teaching Internship

The PPGE's new curriculum proposal, effective from 2017, has made the teaching internship a mandatory activity for all doctoral students. Generally, the doctoral student completes the internship with their own advisor or with another professor working in a related area of knowledge.

This measure was adopted because we consider the teaching internship an important space for integration between graduate and undergraduate studies. It enables the participation of master's and doctoral students, both with and without scholarships, in supervised teaching activities at the undergraduate level in both Pedagogy and licentiate degree programs. Teaching internships are consolidated spaces for training and exchanging teaching and research experiences, which help to enhance teaching activities and undergraduate final projects (TCC). Generally, teaching interns participate in student advising meetings and TCC defense committees.
