Summary: This is a historical study about the creation and implementation of the Learning Laboratory of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Laufes), initially designed to meet technical pedagogical proposals centered on student self-learning, which had its course between the years 1976 and 1991. The question of why it emerged, how it was constituted and how this laboratory operated in that higher education institution is questioned. The objective, based on the investigation of Laufes' past, is to understand its present (BLOCH, 2002) and design prospective paths for its future as a space to support the training processes of the Education Center of Ufes. To compose this narrative, the research uses as main theoretical and methodological foundations the historiographical perspective of Marc Bloch and the concepts of history and narrative by Walter Benjamin. As instruments of data production, it operates, primarily, with analysis of narratives of memories, produced through interviews with subjects who experienced this space, also using the examination of documents and the experience of the researcher himself as a technician of this laboratory. As a result, it proposes the institutional recognition and the re-signification of this space as a producer and repository of audiovisual memory records from the Education Center and from Ufes itself.
